How much does a website redesign actually cost in 2026?
August 11, 2026
"How much does a website redesign cost" is one of the most-searched questions a small business asks before ever talking to a developer, and most of the answers online are either a vague "it depends" or a rate card with no context. Here's a straighter answer.
The three things that actually drive cost
Content migration. If you're moving 5 pages, that's a different job than moving 200 blog posts with images, redirects, and SEO history you need to preserve. This is almost always underestimated going in.
Custom functionality versus a template. A marketing site with a contact form is a small, well-scoped job. A site with a booking system, a member portal, or custom search is a different category of work entirely, closer to a web application than a website.
What you're migrating away from. Rebuilding a site that's currently a static HTML site from 2015 is faster than migrating one built on a CMS with plugins, custom fields, and integrations that all need to keep working on the new stack.
What a reasonable scope conversation looks like
Before any number gets discussed, a competent redesign scope should cover:
- What pages/content actually need to move, and what can be retired
- Whether the current SEO rankings need to be preserved (this changes the migration plan significantly)
- What, if anything, is custom-built versus using an existing component
- Who maintains the site after launch, and what that costs going forward
If a quote arrives before any of that's been discussed, that's a sign the number isn't based on your actual site.
The honest bottom line
There's no single number that means anything without the above. What we'd rather do is have that conversation first, then give you a real number, not a wide range meant to sound reassuring.
